What is Position Sizing in Crypto Trading?
Position sizing is the process of determining how much capital to allocate to a single trade based on your total account size and the maximum amount you are willing to lose if the trade goes against you. It is widely considered the most important risk management skill in trading.
Professional traders typically risk between 1% and 2% of their total capital on any single trade. This means that even a losing streak of 10 consecutive losses only reduces a 2%-risk account by approximately 18%, preserving the majority of capital for recovery.
Understanding Risk-to-Reward Ratio
The risk-to-reward (RR) ratio compares the potential profit of a trade to the potential loss. A 1:3 RR means you risk $1 to potentially make $3. Most professional traders only take trades with a minimum 1:2 RR ratio. A higher RR means you can be profitable even with a win rate below 50%.
| RR Ratio | Break-Even Win Rate | Professional Standard |
|---|---|---|
| 1:1 | 50% | Below standard |
| 1:2 | 33% | Minimum acceptable |
| 1:3 | 25% | Good |
| 1:5 | 17% | Excellent |
